Founding History: The Somali Women’s Studies Centre (SWSC) was established in 2011 as a women-founded and women-led non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to empowering Somali women and advocating for gender equality across Somalia. Registered under the Federal Government of Somalia and Jubbaland State, SWSC is guided by an independent Board of Directors and led by an Executive Director, with over a decade of dedicated work in the field.
SWSC takes pride in being a pioneering organization that amplifies the voices of Somali women, addresses structural inequalities, and advocates for a more inclusive society. Through targeted programs, advocacy efforts, and community-led initiatives, SWSC works to dismantle barriers and create pathways for women’s active participation in leadership and community development.
To uplift the status of women and girls in Somalia by building their skills, confidence, and capacities to participate in decision-making processes, influence policies, and advocate for their rights.
To become a leading organization that champions positive change for Somali women and girls, enabling them to actively contribute to a peaceful and equitable society.
Founded in response to the need for a dedicated organization to advocate for women’s rights in Somalia, SWSC has grown from a grassroots initiative into a prominent voice for gender equality. Starting with a small team of passionate women leaders, SWSC has consistently expanded its impact across Somalia, implementing projects that empower women, engage communities, and challenge harmful norms.
Major Milestones and Key Accomplishments:
SWSC has trained over 1,600 women activists across Somalia in leadership, communication, and critical thinking, directly contributing to the election of over 20 women parliamentarians at both federal and state levels.
SWSC has been instrumental in engaging influential community figures, including religious leaders, in dialogue sessions aimed at preventing gender-based violence (GBV) and promoting positive social norms.
SWSC has helped establish and strengthen numerous community-based structures, such as Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) and district-level GBV Task Forces, empowering local women and providing them with economic and social support.
